The Baracoa concert band in its present form started in 1932 and has endured through both economic downturns, wars and revolutions. Its manifest is to preserve and enrich the traditional music of Cuba with an emphasis on local composers. The Band lends a formal air to many ceremonial occasions in Baracoa.

Bara-rumba is an Afro-Cuban Folkloric Percussionist/Dance and Song Troupe. This folkloric group has developed a unique style. Vibrant, pounding rhythms, sensuous, sexy courtship dances, fire breathing, glass walking and glass eating, are only a sample of the variety of their performances. From the courtly son to the pulsating congo, Bara-rumba performs over 35 dances.

If you go to Baracoa and tune in Radio Emisorra, the Voz de Toa, 90.1 FM, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 1100 a.m. to 1200 p.m., you will hear Cacique Guama. This group of professionals was formed in the 70's in order to play country or campesino music. They entertain the folks situated in isolated pockets in the mountains around Baracoa with their traditional music.

Carlos Hernandez and his Banda Tropical had a traditional Cuban pig roast this February to celebrate their 15th anniversary. The Banda Tropical’s seamless harmonies, perfect timing and lively instrumentation reflect their 15 years of being together. Check out a small portion of their huge repertoire! It varies from bachata to bolero, son to salsa, cumbia to cha-cha-cha, and guaguanco to guajira. Duos, trios, quartets, quintets or all eight, this group can do it all!

The group, Carvajal y sus Tradicionales, was formed in 2005. The majority of their repertoire are original compositions. The genre is traditional Cuban music specific to Baracoa. Between them all, they have about 700 songs, mainly of a political and social nature. Recently they have recorded their first high quality CD in conjunction with the Radio Emissora. You can find them performing at La Casa de la Trova and at La Casa Cultura, Baracoa.

El Duo Voces de Miel was formed in 2004 and began to perform in various restaurants in Baracoa. The partners have participated every year in the Festival de la Farola, in the Anniversary of Baracoa and in other State occasions such as the Water Festival, Caribbean Festival, and Guantanamero. Both of them sing at various worker’s solidarity parties and one of their favourite gigs is to serenade the expectant Mothers in the Maternity Home.

In 1997, Eduardo (El Ruso) got together a group of talented young musicians with the idea of forming a group that could play the traditional music of the area as well as popular Cuban melodies.
They began to play at various hotels and local festivals, building up their musical talent and their popularity. Within 4 years the group was able to record their first CD, entitled To 5 in the Morning. This was done at the prestigious EGREEM studio in Santiago de Cuba.

The group Joventud was formed in 2000, joining the musicians of Septeto Habanero, Madera Limpia and Los Living. This group is known for the scope and variety of its musical genres. They play in festivals such as The Annual Book Fair, Encounter with Tres Players, Festival de la Farola, and Festival del Bacán. Joventud are found in many local communal activities and nighttime parties as well as the Casa de la Trova.

 Serenata was formed in 1998 and has seen various musicians come and go. The group’s traditional music includes the marimbula, an Afro Cuban instrument resembling a wooden packing box. Included in their repertoire are the unique sounds of Kiri-Ba-Nengon, an original song and dance from Baracoa. Wherever there is a party, birthday or anniversary, there you will find these serenaders.

This is a group of country folk paid by the State to maintain their traditions such as the dances Kiri-Ba and Nengon, their cuisine and their music. The rhythm of the son originated in this area and for Cubans this rhythm is sacred. I understood that this group is ¨protejido¨ and the word to me represented that they are protected like a national treasure.. But it simply meant that the State pays them a salary to maintain their traditions.

The group Loly y sus Atrevidos was born on the 16th of September, 2006. The following years were a busy time for them. They participated in many festivals such as: Fiesta a la Guantanamera in 2006 and 2009, Baracoa’s Carnival, the Anniversary of the First of April, project TURNAT, 48th Anniversary of the CDR, Fiesta del Caribe and El Patio La Sandunga in Guantánamo. At this time the group mainly performs at the la Casa de la Trova Victorino Rodríguez and Casa de Cultura Cecilio Gómez Lambert in Baracoa.

The group Los Huracanes was formed in 1972, and in that epocha attained category A at the Festival of Cultural Workers. They are dedicated to the music of the 60s and play at various carnivals, festivals and communal parties around the province. Los Huracanes are very popular with the middle age set as their nostalgic music makes them feel 16 again. Not only the older folks, but the young ones like their bouncy style. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (Beatles) and "Diana" by Paul Anka are the crowd’s favourites. You can normally find them in the Theatre Salon of Baracoa.

Maravilla Yunqueña was formed on the 28th of September, 1970. The group plays in these principal locations: la Casa de la Trova, Baracoa, El Patio de Artex and Hotel Porto Santos. They have played n various festivals both in Guantanamo province and throughout Cuba. The main festivals have been La Guantanameran, the Fiesta del Fuego, and the Festival de la Trova in Santiago de Cuba.

Morbo is one of the most creative groups in Baracoa. They play their own original compositions. Since its beginning in 2003, Morbo has performed at festivals such as Metal H G (Holguín, 2005), Sonidos de la Ciudad (Camaguey, 2007), and Festival de Rox (Contramaestre, 2008). They have been awarded National A Category. Morbo has recorded three original demos, Infernal, Prophecy, 2003 Vampires, Supremacy 2006, and The Kingdom of Silence, 2008. The band members are associates of the Cuban Brotherhood, Hermanos Seis.

Orquesta Baracoa formed in 1944 and was originally called the Orquesta Renovation. The name was changed in 1946 in order to honor the city. Every 18th of November the orchestra has an anniversary party and celebrates with the whole town, dignitaries and all.

Rosa y su Banda was formed in 2001 under the auspices of the ANCI (National Association of the Blind ) and has been well received by the listening public. They have a repertoire of many of their own compositions and have written original pieces in the traditional vein. Rosa y su Banda’s talented musicians are recognized at the provincial level and have been granted confirmed space in Baracoa’s Casa Cultura.

Sexteto Yumuri began in 1990 with a group of experienced musicians. Their purpose was to provide traditional music for the burgeoning tourist industry and the Hotel Castillo was their first gig.
The members of Sexteto Yumuri are the guardians of such traditional genres as the son, bolero son, danzon, habanera, cha cha, zapateo cubano and guaracha. They are specialists in music from Baracoa and in addition to their own compositions, provide a showcase for the many composers that live in the area. The well known songs of Baracoa: Nengon, Kiri-Ba, Aeroplano, Carril, Cabaret, Vale, La Pasion and Bombo Camara are all part of their repertoire.

Born in Maisi and coming from a musical family, the Trio Hermanos Lores formally began in the Cuban army in 1987. During their military service the trio performed in about 14 festivals.
The trio has had various names over the years like Guitarras Fronterizas and Levante del Sol until they settled on Trio Hermanos Lores. As Trio Hermanos Lores, in 2001, they were proud to receive an award at the annual international Encounter of Trios in Havana.

Yerba Buena was formed in 2002 by eight local musicians. Their mission statement was to showcase the composers of Baracoa. With this unusual repertoire they showcased their talents in festivals from Holguín to Guantánamo, Tunas, and Moa. The intent was to spread the word about the musical treasure chest that is Baracoa.
