Serenata was formed in 1998 and has seen various musicians come and go.  The group’s traditional music includes the marimbula, an Afro Cuban instrument resembling a wooden packing box.  Included in their repertoire are the unique sounds of Kiri-Ba-Nengon, an original song and dance from Baracoa.  Wherever there is a party, birthday or anniversary, there you will find these serenaders.

 
 Iluminado Legra Romero, Guiro, singer and director
Illuminado started drumming at the age of seven.  He comes from a family of musicians.  This humble gentleman has been a part of the group Nuevo Son and after this group broke up, he joined Serenata.

Ricardo Bernot Luperon, Maracas and singer
From his parents Ricardo learned percussion at an early age.  He has played in various traditional music groups in Baracoa.  In 1999 he was one of the founding members of Serenata.

Neleido Toirac Hernández, Guitar and singer
Another early starter, Neleido’s first group was Conjunto Campo Alegre.  This group received an award from the Federal  Ministry of Culture.  Now you will find him in Serenata.

Dignatario Matos Zoa, Marimbula, guitar and singer
A self taught musician, Dignatario is the spark of this group.  He has been with Serenata since the beginning in 1998.  He has had lots of experience playing in diverse festivals in Baracoa and all over Guantanamo province.

 
Rafael Leyva Duperey, Bongo
Rafael taught himself to play bongos and has been earning a living as a percussionist ever since.  In 2007 he joined up with Serenata.

Antonio Delfino Machado, Requinto, singer and composer
Tony has played the guitar since childhood and is basically self taught.  He has been a part of various traditional music country groups through the years.  As the leader of Duo Voces de Miel he has attained professional status.  Since 2009 he has also played with Serenata.
